This dissertation begins with the Neutral, as theorised by Roland Barthes over the course of his career. From here the writing extends, engaging a series of philosophical, architectural and cultural referent that resonate with the term. Constructed from a series of essays, the work constitutes a survey, reading instances of neutrality by various methods of presenting, extracting and observing.
